At Thriving with Horses, we believe that healing happens in the context of connection to ourselves, to others, to nature, and to animals who meet us without judgment. Our team combines decades of mental health expertise with deep knowledge of equine-assisted practices, creating a safe and transformative space for growth.
Dr. Rob has been a Licensed Clinical Psychologist on the Monterey Peninsula since 1977, serving individuals, couples, families, and children. He was on staff at Community Hospital in Monterey until 1979 and has dedicated his private practice career to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health concerns. In 2003, Dr. Magnelli became certified in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Personal Development through EAGALA and has continued advanced study and training in the field ever since. He co-wrote the Power Tools for Living program and manual with his wife, Nancy—a program that has been researched, proven effective, and sold to providers around the globe. His work blends clinical expertise with a deep respect for the healing potential of horses.
Nancy began her career as a psychiatric nurse, working in hospitals, outpatient mental health centers, and as the Continuing Care nurse for Monterey County. In 2004, she became certified in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Personal Development, and for over 21 years has immersed herself in the science and best practices of equine-assisted services.
Nancy designs and facilitates programs, trains staff and co-authored the Power Tools for Living manual. Her work is rooted in compassion and a steadfast belief in the capacity for people to heal and grown in the presence of horses.
Each member of our herd brings unique strengths, personalities, and life experiences that enrich the work we do.
Toby is a 15-year-old Irish Warmblood. Born in Ireland, Toby was raised by a wonderful family that loved him. He had a very successful career in Eventing in Ireland and then later in California. As he aged it became more difficult for him to continue to compete. His warm heart and propensity to connect led his owners to donate him to our program. He is kind, gentle, and perceptive. He continues to amaze us in how he nurtures people who are hurting.
Vinnie was originally trained and then competed in Dressage. He was always uneasy in this discipline and was said to be difficult. His owner donated him to us. Vinnie has never been difficult for us. He has blossomed in his role as a therapy horse. He responds to love and kindness but gives back much more than he receives. He has excelled at making people smile and laugh, especially the At-Risk Youth. Vinnie has helped many children and teens to heal and grow, and he has helped many adults regain their footing.
Bella is a 28-year-old Quarter Horse and was the original Boss Mare of our herd. Due to an outside trainer’s aggressive training in the Reigning discipline, her pastern joint on her front leg was injured. We cared for her for over 7 years before she became sound. She has become a wonderful therapy horse and has ministered to hundreds of youths struggling with serious behavior and emotion problems.
Diva is a highly bred Quarter Horse who was in training to be a Cutting Horse competitor. The training seemed to be too stressful for her, and she developed stomach ulcers. Her owners loved her to much to continue her training and generously gave her to us. She became the new leader of our herd. She is extremely intelligent and takes her job seriously. She excels in working with people struggling with anxiety.
Geronimo is an 11-year-old Paint with a history of neglect. He was abused as a young horse and rescued by a friend who then gave him to us. At first Geronimo was shy and reticent to interact with people and the other horses. Geronimo has transformed into a calm, curious, and dependable presence—especially valued for his gentle connection with shy children and timid adults.
Dudley is a 24-year-old Appaloosa miniature horse. He is very smart and loves to be groomed and petted. He is very gentle and provides a great first experience with horses for people who have a fear of horses. People love to hug him. He always greets us with a nicker in the morning.
Merlin is a 5-year-old Palomino miniature horse. He is the comedian of the herd and brings laughter to children and adults who are hurting, anxious, or sad with his playful antics. He loves attention and never tires of it.
A seven-year-old Bay miniature horse. Though she is the smallest on our team, she is full of energy and loves to run. Penny may be shy and reserved at first, but she often chooses to approach the people who are shy or anxious. Once they begin to feel calmer and more confident, she practically cuddles up to them. This makes the person feel very special.
